With a natural talent for mechanics, Richard “Dick” Speer founded Speer (Cascade Cartridge, Inc.) in 1951 after seeing his brother Vernon’s success with Speer Bullets. Dick’s background as a machinist at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle equipped him with the skills needed to produce high-quality cartridge cases, which he initially crafted in a small room at his brother’s plant.
Together with partner Arvid Nelson, Speer recognized a growing demand for component primers, especially after WWII. While their goal was to supply primers to hobby reloaders, their first major shipment was for a military contract. Speer also introduced non-corrosive, non-mercuric sporting cartridges, catering to reloaders’ needs.
As demand grew, Speer expanded operations, purchasing a large chicken farm near his brother’s facility. The farmhouse became the office, and the chicken coop was converted into a production site, which continues to manufacture ammunition today.
Speer Ammunition is widely recognized for its reliability in personal defense and training. The renowned Gold Dot® line is regarded as the top choice for law enforcement, offering the same superior performance in Gold Dot Personal Protection and Short Barrel® products. Notably, in 2009, a $14 million contract equipped all 250,000 French police officers, along with the Gendarmerie, French Customs, and French Corrections, with Speer Gold Dot 9mm ammunition.
